Abstract

At the centre of Sommervogel, the explicitly Swiss début novel of Zürich author Lea Gottheil, is a search for female identity: the protagonist's struggle for personal and artistic self-expression amidst feelings of guilt and shame at having reneged on a promise. Lotte initially interprets the onset of metastasised breast cancer several years later as a punishment, but reflection on her illness in metaphorical terms drawn from both the military arena and the natural world enables her to grow to see it as an opportunity rather than curse. Her illness thus becomes a site of transformation on the journey of life.
