Abstract
Dühr S. (2005) Spatial policies for regional sustainable development: a comparison of graphic and textual representations in regional plans in England and Germany, Regional Studies 39 , 1167–1182. Cartographic representation in strategic spatial plans can be a powerful tool for the communication of spatial policies to achieve sustainable development. Regional plans in England and Germany were analysed to identify the extent to which sustainable development has been translated into policy principles and cartographic representations. The results demonstrate the problematic nature of visualizing the concept of sustainable development, and they show that there is wide variation between the two countries in the form and style of cartographic representation in regional planning in general.
