Abstract

This essay approaches an almost unknown and unusual novel by the Murcian writer Salvador García Jiménez by way of the theoretical paradigm of Disability Studies. Taking into account the definition of the ‘social model’ of disability signalled by various critics (both in the United States and in Spain), the novel Angelicomio launches a critique of the insufficent institutional and state support available for populations of adolescents with disabilities. Published in 1981, the novel marks a turning point in the developing awareness of this educational and formative issue, given that 1982 saw the passage of a ‘Law on the Social Integration of the Disabled’ (LISMI).
