Unusual lesions on the penis of a breeding bull yielding Brucella abortus

Abstract

Brucellosis in bulls is generally characterised by orchitis, hygromatous swelling at the joints, l.ack of libido and impotency. Through this communication we intend to report a case which had lesions not not characteristic of brucellosis yet Brucella abortus was isolated. The bull from Kandivali farm, Bombay (India), exhibited pustular inflammation all over the penis with oedematous swelling leading to phimosis. IBR-IPV infection was initially suspected on the basis of these lesions. Preputial washings were collected in isotonic saline for bacteriological examination and serum for Brucella-serology. Approximately 10ml volume of preputial washings was centrifuged at 3000 g for 15 minutes. The seldiment was used for smear preparation and stained with modified acid-fast technique.
