Abstract

If a molecule is subjected to an external static electromagnetic field, the force and torque felt by the electrons are transmitted to the nuclei. An analogous result holds when the electromagnetic field is oscillatory. These results are applied to derive identities that may be used to test the quality of computations of static quadrupole and dynamic dipole polarizabilities.
