Abstract
We present a theoretical and experimental investigation of the spin-orbit coupling mechanisms in sulphur-substituted nucleic acid components. If the sulphur 3 d orbitals take part in &pgr;-electron configuration, new spin-orbit coupling paths appear. We have studied the phosphorescence of sulphur-containing pyrimidines and purines at 77 K and in the range 1·42–4·2 K.
