Abstract
Permutation-inversion groups which can be used to classify dimer molecules have been systematically studied. The class structure of such groups can be determined simply from the classes of the much smaller sub-group containing only monomer operations. Similarly, the characters of the irreducible representations of a dimer PI group can be determined easily from those of the monomer sub-group. We give explicit formulae for doing this, and even large PI groups, such as for benzene dimer or methane dimer (576 elements), are easily and quickly analysed. These groups are quite closely related to wreath products, and the relationship is briefly discussed. The methods used here can also be applied to higher polymers and some trimer groups are analysed as examples, although these groups are not systematically treated here.
