Abstract
Raman Q branch lineshape measurements are reported for the ? 1 and ? 3 vibrational modes in N 2 0 gas. The evolution of the lineshapes is followed as pressure rises from one to 50 atm at 294 K. Evidence is found of motional narrowing, which counteracts the usual collision broadening. This narrowing is interpreted as the result of a vibrational dephasing process arising indirectly from collision-induced rotational relaxation. Theoretical line-shapes are generated on this basis, with a rotational relaxation scheme derived from the J -scrambling model [1]. Agreement with the lineshape measurements is good at pressures up to 20 atm, but deteriorates at higher pressures, where collision broadening dominates the experimental lineshapes.
