Abstract

A neutron-diffraction study has been carried out on solutions of 2 molal zinc trifluoromethanesulphonate (triflate) in heavy water and 4 molal zinc chloride in heavy water. The first-order isotopic-difference method was applied to Zn 2+ and the hydration of Zn 2+ was determined. Results for the zinc triflate solution show that Zn 2+ has a hydration number of 5·3(3), with water molecules situated at distances given by r ZnO = 2·09(2) Å and r ZnD = 2·69(2) Å. The results for the zinc chloride solution provide clear evidence for Zn 2+ …. Cl - complexation.
