Abstract

A novel integrated optic approach to the manufacture of 10.6µm coherent laser radar systems is described and demonstrated. The approach uses hollow waveguides to guide light between system components which are integrated into a common substrate. The design, manufacture and operation of a seven-element subsystem which is compact and rugged and provides a mixing efficiency in excess of 80% of the theoretical maximum are discussed. The demonstration of the subsystem as a simple homodyne vibrometer is also outlined.
