Abstract
Wet weather flows can drastically affect the performance of collection systems and Waste Water Treatment Plants (WWTPs). Managing these facilities requires an assessment of the design criteria used to size the systems for wet weather flows. Determining how to analyze facilities and deciding on what level of design event is right for a system can be difficult and confusing because of the variety of methodologies available to engineers and managers. The purpose of this paper is to describe methods available, the advantages and disadvantage of these methods, and offer approaches to develop a wet weather design events for a collection system and WWTP. Example methods are included from several municipal master-planning studies that illustrate how results can vary from one approach to another.
