Experience gained from the post-closure aftercare of the contained Münchehagen contaminated site

Abstract

In June 1997, the Lower Saxony state government adopted safeguards for the Münchehagen contaminated site, consisting of monitoring, capping and slurry walls. Specifically founded for this purpose, a subsidiary of the Land-owned Niedersächsische Sonderabfalldeponie Hoheneggelsen GmbH (Lower Saxony Hoheneggelsen Hazardous Waste Landfill Limited Corporation - SDH), Altlastensicherungsgesellschaft mbH (ASG) - a limited corporation providing clean-up services for contaminated sites - was charged with the implementation of the safeguards. The author of this paper worked as a technical manager for ASG. Upon completion of the works in 2001, ASG was dissolved. Since 1 January 2002, the contained Münchehagen contaminated site has been in the post-closure aftercare phase. By means of a business management contract, the regional government in Hanover, responsible for hazard prevention, charged the SDH with project management and coordination of the post-closure aftercare phase.
