Incorrigibility and the mental*This paper is a shortened and revised version of my earlier paper ‘Incorrigibility, the Mental, and Materialism' which appeared in Philosophy Research Archives (Vol. III, No. 2, summer 1977). An earlier version was first given as a talk before the APA (Pacific Division Meetings, March 1973; abstract, Journal of Philosophy , February 1973). The author wishes to express his appreciation to Frederick Olafson, Zeno Vendler and the editors of The Australasian Journal of Philosophy for their helpful criticism and encouragement concerning this paper.

In defence of a simple solution 1 This paper has been greatly improved as a result of criticisms of earlier versions: the philosophy faculty at Calgary where it was read in 1969, Professors H. P. Grice, George Myro, and especially Benson Mates at Berkeley, where it formed part of the author's Ph.D. dissertation in May 1970, critics at the Annual Conference of the New Zealand Branch of the Australasian Association of Philosophy in May 1971, and the referee for this Journal .
