Abstract
Gives a reply to the article by Mary Sissons Joshi and Morag MacLean (published in this issue of World Transport Policy & Practice) which criticized the design of the questionnaire used in earlier research and postulated that this had produced misleading findings which had serious consequences in terms of interpreting the reasons given by parents for restricting their children's independence. Describes factors which may account for the differences in findings in the research studies.
