Abstract
Health care organizations must prepare for different kinds of unexpected events including power outages, environmental threats such as chemical spills or fires, security hazards, and natural disasters. When a disaster strikes, it is up to health care providers, emergency services, all levels of government, and community members to work together to respond to the emergency and maintain patient safety. This article offers strategies for assessing emergency needs, conducting a hazard vulnerability analysis (HVA), running drills, training employees, and working with the community to provide safe care during disasters.
