Abstract
Somatosensory receptors located in the skin, joints, and muscles are responsible in part for humans' ability to perceive the world and to perform daily routines effortlessly. The complexity of the somatosensory system is addressed in the context of balance and falls. Loss of balance and subsequent falls are a major health concern for older adults. Multifaceted programs including activity, education, and environmental modification are recommended to improve elders' health and wellness and minimize the risk of falls.
