Abstract

The relationship between corporate social responsibility (CSR) and development has recently become the focus of scholars concerned with the relationship between business and society. Efforts in this regard have been instrumental both in contributing to the maturation of the contemporary CSR agenda and in the emergence of a critical CSRdevelopment research agenda aimed at highlighting the potential and limitation of CSR efforts geared towards development. However, the polemical nature that the debate on the CSRdevelopment relationship has often taken has constrained the effective conceptualisation of the CSRdevelopment nexus and the advancement of the emerging critical perspective. This paper sets out to strengthen the critical perspective on the CSRdevelopment nexus by identifying three issues that have contributed to the limited conceptual understanding of CSR-development linkages, and proposes three possible areas in the research agenda that can facilitate deeper comprehension of the links between businesses' CSR initiatives and their impacts on development. The paper concludes by examining the implications of these ideas for business's role in sustainable development within developing countries.
