Abstract

Experts on Utopia agree with Erasmus: Book One was written after Mores return to London, and for the purpose of clarifying the delineation of Utopia, which thus becomes Book Two. A notable inclusion is that of the city of the Polylerites, which contrasts with England by a penal system excluding capital punishment for theft. The author suggests that this example, which on first glance appears a promising alternative social policy, is actually not so beneficent after all. In this way, More, armed with irony, mixes praise and satire to invite the reader, and the legislator, to read more vigilantly.
