Abstract

Why do athletes manipulate their performance capacities, for example by taking performance-enhancing drugs? In mass media, this question is mostly discussed on a personalised level. Athletes are depicted as cheaters who try to outperform their competitors by resorting to illegal means. From a sociological perspective, this explanation model is too simple. Doping must rather be explained as a consequence of structural traps in elite sports.
