Abstract

It is important to recognize the ultimate place of “understanding” in architecture. Understanding represents an intersubjective situation, which is organized by a subjective reality that can be shared. In intersubjective understanding, one creates a subjective understanding of the world and shares it, which means she produces knowledge. The subject uses her images to produce her way of understanding the world. Although the word “image” can be very widely used in everyday conversation, it also refers to a philosophical range. Moreover, it can also be said that image is a subjective concept; every subject has her own images in mind. However, it would not be forgotten that there are some shared images, which are similar to a wide range of subjects. Image as a concept, prepares a background for understanding, and proposes relations between the understandings. In artistic disciplines, which propose designing something from nothing—so called “creating”—the way the subject understands the world affects her creative ability. In this essay, image will be assumed as the main concept in understanding the world as well as architecture.
