Abstract

The cyclic motion of particles in a periodic potential under the influence of a constant external force is analyzed in an atom opticalapproach based on Landau-Zener transitions between two resonantstates. The resulting complex picture of population transfers canbe interpreted in an intuitive diagrammatic way.The model is also applied to genuine atom optical systems andits applicability is discussed.
