Abstract
The relaxation of a string trapped into a metastable state isconsidered within the framework of continuum elastic fieldtheory. The decay rate is calculated for the case of an appliedfield close to the threshold one. A variational ansatz is proposedin order to solve the problem at low temperatures, where therelaxation process is dominated by quantum tunneling. Thequantum rate is determined quantitatively and discussed inthe light of recent experiments.
