Abstract

This review-essay contextualizes Timothy Parrish's most recent book, Ralph Ellison and the Genius of America (2012), within the cultural politics that have defined the critical reception of Ralph Waldo Ellison's writings, especially his most famous novel, Invisible Man (1952). This review-essay suggests that, even as it takes Ellison scholarship in new and exciting directions, Parrish's book reminds us of how Ellison's work is still used by critics to engage in a continuation of the culture wars.
