Abstract

A review of the work of Professor Dr. Mikhail P. Petrov on nonlinear interactions of space charge waves is presented. The reported experimental investigations of this distinguished scientist have been performed in cooperation with members of the Physics Department of the University of Osnabrück, Germany. Among the nonlinear interactions of space charge waves are second harmonic generation (overall doubling, i.e., doubling of the wave vector and doubling of the temporal frequency) and overall rectification (spatial and temporal). These phenomena resemble second harmonic generation and rectification of light waves in nonlinear optics. But in addition, for space charge waves spatial doubling (doubling of the wave vector without doubling of the temporal frequency) and spatial (non temporal) rectification have been observed. For these effects no analogous interactions in nonlinear optics are found. In all cases, the experimental results are rather well described by theory.
