Abstract

Structural analysis methodology relating to the dynamic analysis of ship structures is presented. The focus is on numerical analysis procedures, using the finite element method. The equations of motion are defined, and the corresponding solution methods described. Finite element modelling considerations for various levels of sophistication are provided, and guidelines for proper modelling are given. The methodologies presented are demonstrated through applications in several of the more important areas in ship dynamics: wave-induced springing, slam-induced whipping and propeller excitation. A special consideration is given to the shock analysis of ships subjected to underwater explosions.
