Abstract
Tapentadol is a novel centrally acting synthetic analgesic that is both a μ-opioid agonist and a noradrenaline (norepinephrine) reuptake inhibitor. The immediate-release and extended-release formulations of tapentadol are effective in the management of moderate to severe acute and chronic pain, respectively.Tapentadol offers the advantage of a lower incidence of opioid-related gastrointestinal adverse events than oxycodone, while maintaining adequate analgesia.
