Abstract
A recent systematic review and meta-analysis assessed the physical performance-enhancing effects of β2-adrenergic receptor agonists (β2-agonists) relative to placebo in randomized controlled trials in healthy participants. Inhaled β2-agonists (salbutamol [albuterol], formoterol, salmeterol and terbutaline) did not display any significant effects on endurance, strength or sprint performance. Some evidence indicates that systemic β2-agonists may have a positive effect on anaerobic capacity and strength, but the evidence base is weak and pertains only to the use of salbutamol.
