Abstract

A model is proposed to explain the influence of a magnetic field on the work hardening of metals. The magnetic field facilitates depinning of dislocations from paramagnetic stoppers. As a result, dislocations are more flexible and reorient more easily in the internal stress field. This leads to a more e cient minimization of the dislocation energy and to an additional work hardening of the crystal. The model proposed here allows one to describe the principal features of the effect. The possibility of controlling the effect by a microwave magnetic field is discussed.
