Abstract
The current knowledge of sudden unexplained/unexpected death in patients with epilepsy or SUDEP is summarized. In pharmacorefractory presumably symptomatic (“cryptogenic”) and symptomatic epilepsies with focal onset seizures, it has to be assumed that more than 50% of early deaths are SUDEP. Suggestions for informing especially high risk patients and their relatives are made.
