Abstract
We describe the role of Academician H. V. Karpenko in the development of a new scientific direction “ Physicochemical Mechanics of Materials” and the formation of the Physicomechanical Institute of the Ukrainian National Academy of Sciences as a leading scientific center in the field of materials science.
