Abstract
This essay emphasizes the political use of revolutionary pamphlets written in Occitan from 1788 to 1794 and outlines key elements in the difficult socio-cultural conflict between Paris and Toulouse. In 1790 the Constituent Assembly launched an important campaign to translate all speeches and rules in regional languages for those ‘peasants’ who still could not politically understand the Revolution. But the reform of the Catholic Church (‘Constitution civile du clergé’) of July 1790 marked a point of no return for the people of Toulouse: still attached to their priests and their traditional culture, they finally turned against the revolutionaries.
