Abstract
Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) is applied to characterize the organic compounds 4-nitroaniline and 4-nitrotoluene by measuring the intensity of atomic lines. The hypothesis of local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE) is verified by comparing the measured value of electron density in the laser-induced plasma with its lower limit, for which LTE holds good. The present study infers that the O/N intensity ratio is a unique parameter to discriminate each nitro-compound from the explosives.
