Abstract

The accumulation of pathological prion protein is used as a diagnostic marker for transmissible spongiform en<?xm-insertion_mark_start author="Willingale-Theune" time="20040128T160509+0100"?>c<?xm-insertion_mark_end?><?xm-deletion_mark author="Willingale-Theune" time="20040128T160509+0100" data="e"?>ephalopathies. According to <?xm-deletion_mark author="Willingale-Theune" time="20040128T160841+0100" data="the "?>European Union (EU) regulations cattle older than 30 months of age (Germany, France, Italy, and Spain by national law >24 months) and slaughtered for human consumption must be tested by using rapid tests for bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE). Likewise <?xm-deletion_mark author="Willingale-Theune" time="20040128T160821+0100" data="must be "?>fallen stock and clinically affected animals<?xm-insertion_mark_start author="Willingale-Theune" time="20040128T160830+0100"?> must be tested<?xm-insertion_mark_end?>. This article gives a short overview <?xm-deletion_mark author="Willingale-Theune" time="20040128T160909+0100" data="over"?><?xm-insertion_mark_start author="Willingale-Theune" time="20040128T160909+0100"?>of<?xm-insertion_mark_end?> the incidence of BSE in Europe. The diagnostic hierarchy, i.e.<?xm-insertion_mark_start author="Willingale-Theune" time="20040128T160919+0100"?>,<?xm-insertion_mark_end?> the officially approved methodology for the confirmation of suspect rapid test cases<?xm-insertion_mark_start author="Willingale-Theune" time="20040128T160956+0100"?>,<?xm-insertion_mark_end?> and the organi<?xm-deletion_mark author="Willingale-Theune" time="20040128T160928+0100" data="s"?><?xm-insertion_mark_start author="Willingale-Theune" time="20040128T160929+0100"?>z<?xm-insertion_mark_end?>ation of the numerous laboratories involved in this large<?xm-insertion_mark_start author="Willingale-Theune" time="20040128T160934+0100"?>-<?xm-insertion_mark_end?><?xm-deletion_mark author="Willingale-Theune" time="20040128T160933+0100" data=" "?>scale testing for BSE <?xm-deletion_mark author="Willingale-Theune" time="20040128T160946+0100" data="is"?><?xm-insertion_mark_start author="Willingale-Theune" time="20040128T160946+0100"?>are<?xm-insertion_mark_end?> described. Special emphasis is given to necessary quality control measures currently in place for BSE rapid testing laboratories and to measures intended to assure a consistent performance of the commercially available rapid test kits.
