Abstract
There is a need to develop effective and cost-effective interventions for the treatment of alcohol dependence. In Hertfordshire, following the development and implementation of a three-stage community programme, we aimed to increase the percentage of community detoxifications and succeeded to achieve 69% at the end of the year 2010. This article discusses the challenges and innovations required to achieve this positive result.
