Abstract

In Jackfruit (Artocarpus heterophyllus Lamk.) the physiological and biochemical parameters for degree of recalcitrance were identified during seed and embryonic axis development in terms of desiccation and freezing sensitivity. Viability in relation to moisture content, soluble proteins and soluble carbohydrates and electrical conductivity of leachates was examined during development and after desiccation and freezing. There were differences in responses of whole seeds and axes to desiccation amongst the three stages of maturity. After desiccation to the same moisture levels highest viability was exhibited by seeds of the ripe stage and axes of mature and ripe stages. With desiccation, total soluble proteins and carbohydrates declined and maximum electrical conductivity was observed in seeds and axes of the immature stage. Desiccation and freezing sensitivity in seeds and axes of jackfruit decreased up to the mature stage which was the most tolerant. Assessment of physiological maturity and genetic make up of cultivars are important factors.
