Abstract
This article presents a cross-cultural view of the importance of social class in the lives of young children by drawing from examples of American and British investigations, articles, and commentaries. Much material has been compiled about the impact of ethnicity and gender on early school experiences, yet socio-economic class affiliation is often overlooked. The interactions of social class and ethnicity are also considered here, and the relevance of this information for educators is underscored.
