GacA catalyzes the final step in dTDP‐L‐rhamnose biosynthesis which is critical for the biosynthesis of the Group A carbohydrate, a virulence determinant of the human pathogen Group A Streptococcus (GAS). GacA is a monomeric enzyme (in front of mirror), in contrast to the previously characterized RmlD dimer (in the mirror), and is essential for GAS survival (in background, left: wild‐type cells, right: conditional knockout cells).
