Magnetospirillum gryphiswaldense MSR‐1 synthesizes membrane‐enclosed magnetite (Fe3O4) nanoparticles, magnetosomes, for magnetotaxis. Formation of these organelles requires MamB, a cation diffusion facilitator (CDF) protein with two roles: it initiates magnetosome vesicle formation in a transport independent process and transports iron for magnetite nucleation. Bacterial iron homeostasis is often regulated by regulators of the Fur family, including in Bacillus subtilis both Fur (left; modeled on PDB 3MWM) and PerR. Resistance to iron (yellow) overload is conferred primarily by induction of a newly assigned iron efflux P1B‐4‐type ATPase, PfeT (top, represented by a P1B‐type ATPase from L. pneumophila PDB 4BBJ) with a secondary contribution from the Fe sequestration protein MrgA (right; represented by E. coli Dps; PDB 1DPS). DdrO regulates the radiation desiccation response and apoptotic‐like cell death in the Deinococcus radiodurans. Light microscopy was used to visualize the effects of depleting the DdrO repressor on D. radiodurans morphology (left to right): Nomarski interference contrast (DIC), membrane staining (FM4‐64), DNA staining (DAPI), and merged images. The cells were depleted of DrdO from 8h (top), 16 h (middle), or 24 h (bottom). DdrO‐depleted cells display morphological changes evocative of an apoptotic‐like response including DNA condensation and vesicle formation. Epulopiscium sp. type B is an uncultured Gram positive intestinal symbiont of extraordinary size (100–300 μm in length). Epulopiscium reproduces by production of internal offspring by a process related to endospore formation.
