Abstract
The loosening of orthopaedic implants, either in joint replacement arthroplasty or in the trauma setting, is one of the most feared complications of surgical treatment, since it is associated to an increased risk of revision surgery. Very few alternative approaches are currently available to manage this complication. Moreover, in patients affected by primary or secondary osteoporosis, the risk of implant loosening is definitely increased. The use of surface coatings is aimed to de-crease this feared complication. The purpose of this article is to review the main experimental and clinical studies regarding the use of hydroxyapatite implant coatings in orthopaedic and trauma surgery.
