Abstract

The objective of this work is to improve the quality characteristic of an injection moulding product (plastic tray) made from blends plastic (75% polypropylene (PP) blends with 25% low density polyethylene (LDPE)) by optimizing the injection moulding parameters using Taguchi method. The performance of these plastic trays is evaluated by test in terms of their flexure strength. By using an orthogonal array (OA), main effect, the signal-to-noise (S/N) ratio, and analysis of variance (ANOVA), the optimum condition for injection moulding with the highest flexure strength can be obtained as well as the significant factors of the process. The process parameters such as injection speed, melting temperature, injection pressure, holding pressure, holding time and cooling time are the factors that determine the quality of the product in this case. In this study, interaction between parameters is performed as well to find out the influence of factors' interaction. Confirmation analysis test with the optimal levels of process parameters are carried out in order to demonstrate the goodness of Taguchi method.
