Abstract
Riparian landowners along three forested and state wild rivers in Wisconsin were found to have "adequate" knowledge of official policy on protecting the streams in their natural, undeveloped, and free-flowing condition, but had misconceptions about state policy regarding use, development, and activities on lands adjacent to the streams. Landowners supported protection policies for the streams themselves, but disagreed with policies for protecting the river corridor. River problems were not perceived as severe, but landowners were concerned about the social impacts of heavy recreation use. They favored innovative and light-handed management approaches. Finally, absentee landowners were more supportive of the wild river program than were resident owners.
