Abstract

Suffomyia scutellaris gen. n. & sp. n. is described from specimens collected at the intertidal zone along the western coast of the Gulf of Elat (northern Red Sea), Sinai. This is the first representative of the subfamily Zaleinae in the Palaearctic Region. The phylogenetic relationships of the Zaleinae are discussed, and the subfamily is shown to be an intermediate group between typical Canacidae and Tethinidae, indicating that only one family is involved.
