Abstract
Throughout the 20th Century, stratigraphic work within the Keuper Group was a difficult quest even for specialists due to a multitude of different stratigraphic subdivisions. Homonymous terms of different meaning, as well as a wealth of synonyms, hindered the comparison of stratigraphic sections in different regions. In 1997, the German Subcommission for Permian and Triassic Stratigraphy decided on a general and simplified lithostratigraphic subdivision of the Keuper Group into twelve Formations, applicable in all regions of Germany. This subdivision into mappable lithostratigraphic units is supplemented by a complementary subdivision into six allostratigraphic Folgen, designed as log-stratigraphic units. This paper briefly reviews the relations between some traditional regional terms and the new simplified subdivision of the German Keuper Goup used in the Stratigraphische Tabelle von Deutschland 2002 (STD 2002).
