Abstract

Cimicidae are known from bats, birds, and man in Western North America. The bed bug, Cimex lectularius L., is cosmopolitan and will not be discussed here. The remaining species include the swallow bug, Oeciacus vicarius Horvath, which is widely distributed in Western North America mainly on cliff swallows but also occasionally on barn swallows. Other bird bugs are the Purple Martin bugs of the genus Hesperocimex, with 1 species from Western United States, another in Southern Arizona and Sonora and a third in Baja California. Also the Mexican chicken bug, Hesperocimex inodorus Duges, occurs throughout Western North America and only in this area on a variety of bird hosts. Finally, there is Synxenoderus comosus List, known only from a few localities because the nests of its host, the white throated swift, are so inaccessible.
