Abstract

Old age is considered a blessing in Nigeria and Ekiti State in particular. However, the various challenges facing the aged in Nigeria have become a source of concern as many of these elderly live their old age in poverty, insecurity, hunger, lack of medical health care, inadequate government support programme, loneliness and lack of shelter. Hence, this study investigates how poverty is affecting older people and their subsequent mortality in Ekiti State, Nigeria. Data was collected from elderly males and females. The Questionnaire focuses on socio-demographic status, health condition, economic status, support from government and family, relationship neighbors as well as the availability of shelter, food, clothing, health services, portable water, sanitation facilities and electricity. A total of 540 respondents were selected from 9 Local Government Areas, focusing on urban, small town and rural areas. Questionnaires and in-depth interview were utilized. The age of respondents starts from 65 and above. The finding revealed that the old people in Ekiti State are actually living in poverty. Most of the time they lack health care, good feeding, experience loneliness, non- availability of essential social amenities and other needs.
