Abstract
One of the more intriguing topics to have emerged in the field of higher education is that of electronic learning (e-learning). There are increasing calls for e-learning to become fully integrated in curriculum delivery in institutions. This paper identifies some principles and actions that could guide the integration of e-learning while delivering the curriculum of Nigerian Universities. Two research questions were used. Stratified random sampling technique was used to select 500 lecturers from universities in the southeastern part of Nigeria. A 20-item questionnaire was used to collect data. Data were analyzed using mean and standard deviation. Findings indicated five principles for an e-learning framework in universities: e-learning will take a learner-centered approach and be interactive, facilitate active-learning, follow good practice, exploit opportunities for collaboration, be innovative, and develop models for financial affordability/sustainability. The five action areas identified are the redesign of course content and programs, development of a “community of practice” in which e-learning information and practices are shared, professional development for university lecturers, the recognition of innovative e-learning practices, and constant access to e-learning exemplars to lecturers. It is recommended that these principles and action areas should be implemented in the universities. The universities should pay attention to the type of infrastructure and resources available as well as develop a strategy for e-learning with a view to adding value to the core functions of the universities.
