Epulopiscium sp. type B is an uncultured Gram positive intestinal symbiont of extraordinary size (100–300 μm in length). Epulopiscium reproduces by production of internal offspring by a process related to endospore formation. Magnetospirillum gryphiswaldense MSR‐1 synthesizes membrane‐enclosed magnetite (Fe3O4) nanoparticles, magnetosomes, for magnetotaxis. Formation of these organelles requires MamB, a cation diffusion facilitator (CDF) protein with two roles: it initiates magnetosome vesicle formation in a transport independent process and transports iron for magnetite nucleation. Gut bacteria recognize glycan substrates using cell surface glycoside hydrolases containing multiple carbohydrate binding modules (CBMs). Cockburn et al. characterized the five CBMs of a surface anchored, starch‐degrading α‐amylase of Eubacterium rectale (Amy13K) that displays high affinity for amylose corn starch as well as amylopectin and maltooligosaccharides, but little affinity for potato starch.
