Abstract

The study analysed the influence of various aspects of parents' adjustment to divorce on the behaviour problems displayed by their sons and daughters. Participants were 575 parents and children (223 parents and their 352 sons and daughters) from separated or divorced families. Different measures were used to assess parental adjustment to divorce, and the Child Behaviour Checklist (CBCL) was employed to assess behaviour problems in the children. Our data shows associations between variables reflecting parental adjustment to divorce and behavioural problems in their children evaluated with the CBCL. Also, performed statistical tests reflect significant differences in the occurrence of behavioural problems (internalising, externalising, and total) in children according to the score obtained by parents on measures evaluating adaptation to divorce. We discuss the implication of our findings for designing prevention/intervention programmes to help the family group as a whole –mothers, fathers and children– to adapt successfully to the situation of divorce.
