Abstract
This paper presents experimental results from a series of drilling test in which a number of different drills such as HSS, pure carbide, carbide tipped, Co-Ti coated HSS, TiN coated HSS and PCD tipped twist drills are used to machine LM6Mg15SiC-Al-MMC. It includes the studies of the suitability and comparative performance of different drills. The influences of drilling parameters on different response characteristics have been established for each drill. The results established that the PCD tipped drill is superior and provides much better performance compared to other drills. The pure carbide and TiN coated HSS drills generate moderate surface finish and lesser thrust force compared to HSS, Co-Ti coated and carbide tipped drills. Taguchi method and Grey relational analysis are used to optimise the drilling parameter for effective drilling of Al/SiC-MMC. Confirmation test results established the fact that the suggested optimal parametric combinations are appropriate and improved the multiple quality characteristics. This improvement is recorded as −69.3% on thrust force and −180.4% on surface roughness height (Ra).
