Abstract
Applications of new learning in a community setting can be valuable learning experiences for high ability students in secondary schools. Mentorships can enhance self-esteem, extend personal interests and talents, as well as enlarge career aspirations of gifted learners who move outside of their classrooms into the community. This paper looks at one successful mentorship program in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. The use of mentors stretched students' minds, and provided an experience approach to relevant learning. The article has implications for teachers, vocational guidance counsellors and school administrators.
